The rebellion against the Seleucid tyrant, Antiochus Epiphanes (160–146 CE) by the Maccabees was founded on an attempt to assimilate Judaism into Hellenism, which resulted in the pollution of the temple through the sacrifice of a pig on its altar. Overall, an interesting correlation exists between Jesus’ purification of the temple and his pronouncement of God’s arrival as king in order to eliminate the apostasy of the temple elite who had acceded to foreign imperialism. For Jesus, this purification was totally reliant on God’s action in history, not on any army he might raise!
